Dendrobium Superstar 'Dandy' x Ise 'Pearl'

mini dendrobium: close-up of pot

T
his dendrobium orchid cross epitomizes the  breeding of compact 'nobile type' dens that can be bloomed without the exacting cultural requirements demanded by the standard nobile hybrids. Much of this hybridizing has taken place in Hawaii in recent years.

This orchid plant grows about 12 to 14"   tall, forming several new growths each year. As the narrow canes mature, they bloom profusely carrying from 8 to 10  white blooms brushed in pastel shades of baby pink and green that are more than 2" across! This orchid blooms during the fall to spring months and the flowers last for several weeks.

Unlike standard nobile dendrobiums, these dendrobium orchids are easier to care for.  They do not require very low night temperatures, nor a specific fertilizer regimen to bloom. However they do need slightly lower night temperatures (55-60) for a few weeks in the fall or winter months to set buds.

We grow our plant under a 250 watt halide bulb. Like most dens, it loves to grow potbound-in fact, it has bloomed several times in a 2.25" deep rose pot as shown on the left.
