Paph Karyol Vaughn's Gold (armeniacum x haynaldianum) was registered only in 1995. It produces large luminous blooms in ghostly white and lemon yellow on compact plants. The plant shown is a first bloom seedling and produced both bifloral and single flowered spikes. The blooms are large, no doubt influenced by armeniacum, with the outstretched petals of haynaldianum. The colouration of the flower reveals that the cross was made with haynaldianum album, probably with the intention of producing yellow flowers. The flowers have thin almost translucent petals and appear to be fragile; yet they are long-lasting and remain in bloom for many weeks. The plant themselves are handsome and compact. Though probably falling short of the standards of the judging system, this is an unusual and subtle hybrid that deserves to be remade and appreciated more widely. |
