Registered in 1993 by the Orchid Zone, Paph. Flamecrest is a near primary cross combining Gloriosum, a paph maudiae-type hybrid with rothschildianum. This hybrid is an improvement over an older hybrid, Callo-Rothschildianum, registered almost 100 years ago.

Pahiopedilum Gloriosum consists primarily of callosum with an injection of lawrenceanum. This injection of lawrenceanum, though small, is critical. It helps keep the dorsal tip flat, preventing it from twisting as callosum tends to do, and undoubtedly brings some hybrid vigour to the cross.

The resulting cross of Gloriosum with rothschildianum is striking. The flower pictured is a first-bloom seedling with a dorsal width of 6 cms. The flower has  good substance and a somewhat glossy finish. The second bud can also be seen, and when mature, this plant should produce up to three (maybe more?) large blooms on taller stems. The plant itself consists of two large growths (natural spread of 50 cms.) with handsome finely-mottled foliage. I suspect then when these plants get up to size, they will bloom every year without much trouble, unlike rothschildianum.

Similar crosses using vinicolour versions of Maudiae-type hybrids can result in almost jet-black flowers that we like to call midnight multiflorals. The coloratum forms, however, are also very attractive, and perhaps more interesting in the pattern of spots and stripes that they display. This type of hybrid can be grown in the  home.
