in 1991, Paph. Landmark (glaucophyllum x sanderianum) is the first widely available primary sanderianum hybrid in recent years. It is fast growing, easy to bloom, and inexpensive, relative to the other sanderianum hybrids on the market. The pouch is often a nice pink-maroon, thanks to glaucophyllum, which also adds spotting and ruffled edges to the petals. The clean lines of the sanderianum dorsal are diffused somewhat by the glaucophyllum parent. Sanderianum, however, has considerably elongated the petals, which in some cultivars are 15 cms long. There is a lot of variation in colour, flower size, and petal length in this grex, though the basic flower shape tends to remain the same. Many clones appear 'washed out', and the best ones have deeper colour and longer petals. Though perhaps not exhilarating in itself, Landmark has much to offer as a parent: long-petalled, easy to grow hybrids, with interesting colours and shapes are a possibility. Glaucophyllum, when mated to other multiflorals, has given some well-know hybrids such as Vanguard, Shireen, and Rodney Wilcox Jones. Using Landmark instead of glaucophyllum to replicate these breeding lines, should all result in worthwhile long-petalled hybrids. |
