Registered in 1956 by Ratcliffe's (UK), Paeony ( Noble x Belisaire) has been among the most enduring of all complex paphs.

Its rounded flowers have a wonderful thick substance, imparted no doubt from one of its grandparents, paph. bellatulum, which appears to have also reduced the size of the plant somewhat, at least compared to most standard complex paphs.

Paeony has been used extensively in breeding, and has parented over 150 hybrids. Several of these have received awards, and a clone of Paph Royalet (x barbatum) received an AM/AOS as recently as 1996.

'Regency' is one of the best known Paeony clones, and received it's AM only in 1983. The blooms last a long time and their rich claret-red hues are best appreciated in good light.
