Paphiopedilum Olivia

This is a classic orchids cross, if there ever was one, first made more than 100 years ago! Lovely shell-pink glossy blooms characterize Paphiopedilum Olivia, which results from an unlikely pairing of two slipper orchid species, paph tonsum and paph niveum.

Paph tonsum has passed on its super gloss and shape, while niveum provides the white background and allows the pink colour, supressed in tonsum, to be expressed. The result is an orchid hybrid of great charm. There are numerous clones of this hybrid, and several have been awarded.

It is not the easiest of slipper orchids to find but well worth the search.
