Phrag Don Wimber is one of the loveliest besseae hybrids of recent years. One of its parents, Eric Young (besseae x longifolium), is noted for its 'starburst' flowers in soft salmon-orange (see our 1998 Philadelphia Flower Show Galleries for a photo). This hybrid has been 'improved' by being back-crossed to besseae. This is evident in its fuller flatter form with more horizontally held petals. Furthermore, the colour has been intensified, resulting in a rich orange-red overlaid over a yellow base. The colour is especially deep in the pouch and contrasts beautifully with the yellow colour of the inner fold of the pouch. This plant is easy to grow and will
flower on a single growth with two flowers. The picture shown is that of a first-bloom
seedling. This hybrid belongs in all phrag hybrid collections. |
