The ethereal blooms of Phrag wallisi, with their long wispy petals, must
be among the most alluring of all slipper orchids.
The plants tend to bloom in the summer on compact growths, often with several blooms to a
stem. The bud elongates as it develops with the coiled petals visible beneath the pale
green dorsal. As the flowers open, the petals, already almost 10 cms in length, unfurl and
begin to grow, practically before your eyes, and can grow to more than 30 cms long.
Hybrids made with this species can be thought of as compact and faster-blooming versions
of those made using Phrag caudatum, and are thus suited to those with limited space, or
who want blooms quickly... |
